Playa del Rey, formerly known as Palisades del Rey in its founding in the 1920s, is just north of Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and south of the Marina Del Rey, the largest man-made small-craft marina in the world, waterway inlet. Loyola Marymount University is east of the city in the neighboring community of Westchester. Playa Vista, also known as “Silicon Beach,” is a short drive north east of Playa del Rey and has tech hubs such as Google, Youtube Space LA, Facebook, and Verizon, to name a few. For this reason, there are many young professionals living in Playa del Rey who work in the tech and start up business world.

Playa del Rey’s beaches are great for swimming, volleyball, biking, even at times surfing and kite flying on this very wide beach area. The city is known as “the last small beach town in Los Angeles” as it was the last coastal area to be developed as a residential community. The neighborhoods were built along the sand dunes and all of the houses in this area were custom built, many as beach homes owned by Hollywood actors and producers, including Cecil B. Demille, Charles Bickford, and others. Playa del Rey has housing for all – there are many hills in the neighborhood with breathtaking unobstructed ocean views and others that overlook the Ballona Wetlands, a 600 acre ecological reserve just north of Playa del Rey. There is much to be explored and enjoyed in Playa del Rey such as some fan favorite spots like Caffe Pinguini Italian Restaurant, Playa Provisions and Tanner’s Coffee Co.
